While heat pumps are a common and cost-effective method of heating and cooling a home, they are still mechanical systems and are prone to occasional breakdowns. Some typical issues with heat pumps and their likely origins are listed below:
Heat Pump Doesn't Heat or Cool Right
You shouldn't expect the heat pump's output to feel like an oil or gas forced-air furnace's output since heat pumps don't discharge air as hot as those systems' released air.
However, if the air from your heat pump is significantly cooler than what you're used to, you should take the following measures.
A heat pump may automatically switch to defrost mode to avoid icing over. This can cause it to blow chilly air briefly. Remember that the heat pump will have to work harder to generate heat when defrosting and/or when it's really cold outside.
Heat Pump Freezes Up or Trips Breaker
In extremely cold conditions, it is not uncommon for heat pumps to ice up; nonetheless, the defrost cycle should activate at regular intervals to remove the ice. If the defrost cycle fails to thaw the frozen condenser, the heat pump should be turned off.
Check that the filter is clear and that the return air vents are not obstructed.
Most heat pumps have backup heating elements that kick in when the temperature dips dangerously low, or the power goes out, so you won't be left in the cold if your heat pump loses power.
Heat Pump Blower Doesn't Work
This may be caused by the thermostat mounted on the wall or the limit switch on the heat pump just below the plenum (the box that distributes heated air to all of the ducts). The limit switch in a furnace or heat pump is designed to shut off the heat pump if the air in the plenum gets too hot.
Check the thermostat to see if the Fan switch has been turned on. If it has, turn it to OFF or to Auto.
If it is already set to OFF or Auto, the heat pump's limit switch needs to be adjusted.
Heat Pump Cycles Incorrectly
Overheating could be the source of a heat pump's repeated cycling off and on, which could be the result of a blocked filter or a broken blower. It could be time to clean or replace the filter.
If the heat pump in your home is not cycling correctly, check the settings of the thermostat.
If you have a thermostat, you should start there. If this happens, it's likely because the thermostat isn't set up correctly and isn't getting a representative sample of the air in the room. The latter scenario is not the problem if the thermostat has been installed there for some time and the heat pump has previously operated without incident.
Heat Pump Makes Noises
Ensure the cover panels are securely put on if the heat pump makes rattling noises when operating. Tighten them up if they aren't already. Other possible sources include loose components in the air handler or vibrating ductwork.
Since many heating ducts are metal, they efficiently transmit noise from the air handler to the rooms. To prevent noise transfer, a heating contractor can install flexible insulation ductwork between the heat pump and the ducting runs.
Pinging or popping sounds could be caused by thermal expansion or air passing a loose metal flap inside the ductwork. Listen for it as you move down the ducts. Make a small dent in the sheet metal if you come across it; this will make the surface more solid and less prone to movement when the metal heats and cools.
Heat Pump a dirty air filter
If the HVAC system's air filter hasn't been swapped out for a new one in over three months, the heat pump's efficiency has likely dropped due to dust and other debris buildup. The filter should be replaced every few months (the frequency will vary with the filter's efficiency).
Heat Pump Tripped circuit breaker
If the heat pump doesn't turn on, the power may have been shut off because of a voltage surge in the system, usually from the blower motor. Try turning the heat pump back on once you've reset any flipped switches.
Heat Pump Thermostat mistakes
A heat pump's apparent malfunctions can multiply if the thermostat isn't set properly or someone else has tampered with it without your knowledge. If you have an advanced Wi-Fi smart thermostat, examine the manual to see if there are any configuration mistakes. This is the most common cause of a heat pump's inability to switch between heating and cooling modes or to run for an adequate amount of time.
